What is health?

Health is harmony. Health means experience of physical, mental and spiritual wholeness. Living a purposeful life – is health. Health is a process of growth to completion. Top

And Ill Health

Ill Health is when your inner reserve, sometimes referred to as Vital Force, is out of harmony. This may be caused by external physical factors – bad foods or injury, but other intricate influences from emotional reactions – fears, hate, rage, etc.

Ill health is then seen as symptoms. These are the way the body seeks to heal. All healing is self-healing. Nature cures – only sometimes help is needed to direct this natural self-healing. Symptoms are therefore important to the practitioner. It is why you sought help! More so is a full

description of the symptoms. “I feel sick” tells nothing, other than you are not well. Questions are asked of you to describe this: the pain, what part of the body is affected, the sensations, and also what makes it better or worse e.g. warmth, lying down, bending over, etc. All the questions asked in consultations have a purpose and your answer a meaning. Two hours and you are in!

Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), the initiator of the principles of the Homeopathic art of healing, found that after many years of labour as a doctor, diseases were only cured with remedies that are like the disease. A cure means the symptoms will never return; the patient will be in full health. If a substance created symptoms of a disease in a healthy patient, then in patients with the same symptoms, this remedy will cure them. This is known as like cures like. Top

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathic medicine is a natural pharmaceutical science that uses various plants, minerals or animals in very small dose to stimulate the sick person’s natural defences. The medicines are individually chosen for their ability to cause in overdose the similar symptoms the person is experiencing. “Homoios” in Greek means similar and “pathos” means disease or suffering. Since one’s symptoms are actually efforts of the organism to re-establish homeostasis or balance, it is logical to seek a substance that would, in overdose, cause the similar symptoms the person is experiencing. The medicines, thus, go with, rather than against, the person’s natural defences.

In essence, homeopathy is composed of two highly systematic methods: toxicology and case taking. First, homeopaths find out the specific physical, emotional and mental symptoms that various substances cause in overdose. Homeopathic texts have more details on toxicology than any other source. Second, the homeopaths interview their patients in great detail to discover the totality of physical, emotional and mental symptoms the person is experiencing. The homeopaths seek to find a substance that would cause the similar symptoms the person has and then gives it in small, specially prepared dose.

It seems illogical to give doses of substances that cause symptoms similar to those the sick person has in order to cure them. How it can be explained?

Homeopaths, like many modern physiologists, recognize that symptoms represent the best efforts of the organism to adapt to and defend against various stresses or infections. Because the body is not always successful in dealing with every stress or infection, it is important to find a substance in nature that has the capacity to mimic the symptoms the person is experiencing in order to aid the body in its efforts to defend and ultimately heal itself.

The “law of similars”, the basic principle of homeopathy, is even used in some conventional medical therapies, such as immunizations and allergy treatments. These treatments, however, are not pure homeopathy since homeopathic medicines are more individually prescribed, given in smaller doses, and used to treat sick people and to prevent disease.

Homeopaths use such small doses that they couldn’t possibly have any physiological effect.

Although we do not understand precisely how the homeopathic medicines work, there is clear evidence that the medicines are active and can heal. Homeopathy became popular in 1800s because of its success in treating many infectious diseases that raged during that time, including yellow fever, scarlet fever, cholera and many others. The death rate in homeopathic hospitals was between one-half to one-eighth of those in conventional medical hospitals. Homeopathic medicines also have been shown to work on infants and on various animals (including dogs, cats, horses and even cows) where it is highly unlikely that they are acting only as a placebo. Homeopaths also find that people who are being treated with homeopathic medicine for chronic disease sometimes experience a temporary exacerbation in their symptoms as the body defences are being stimulated. Homeopaths have found that a “healing crisis” is sometimes necessary to achieve healing. It is highly unlikely that this temporary worsening of symptoms is the result of a placebo effect. Top

Is it possible to use conventional drugs at the same time as homeopathic medicine?

It is possible to take them together, though the homeopathic medicines often work fast and well enough that the person does not need to take conventional drugs. Some conventional medicines, however, are so strong that they inhibit any action of the homeopathic medicine. In such situations the individual must decide if he or she wishes to use conventional or homeopathic medicine. Top
How Homeopathy Works and Why

Hahnemann took all the then known herbal, metal and mineral drugs and experimented with them on healthy patients. He applied his findings to curing the sick and from this the art of homeopathic cure was established. This was all meticulously recorded. Since his time, a thousand and more remedies have been proved and used to cure patients. These too have been recorded. Often the remedy was a poison. The physicians of old time were well used to giving poisons to their patients in the belief the cured. Sulphur, mercury, arsenic, strychnine, antimony and many more were commonly used. Hahnemann found that when these poisons were diluted and made potent by shaking (succussing) they became healing remedies. Strange but true! Top

Remedy Pictures

With each homeopathic remedy there is a “picture”, which is the sum total of the symptoms the remedy created in a healthy person. The homeopath, in taking your case, seeks to find in you the “picture” of a remedy. This is a skill and the art of healing. Hahnemann firmly believed and proved, that one remedy can and does cure. The remedy is called the simillum (Latin for similar). When a carefully (and as best as is possible) selected remedy is given, ! pillule, directly in the mouth or dissolved in water, of a particular dilution, this is all that is required. One tiny pillule!

No other remedy is to follow until this first prescription has fully acted in the body. Sometimes the good work of this 1 pillule can act for years. Truly amazing! All homeopaths will have cases where this one pillule brought wonderful relief to a patient, in a very short space of time, often in minutes. Top

The Chronic and Unremitting

However, today this is often not so easy. Most illnesses are chronic. This is opposite of an acute symptom. An acute symptom is one that has rapid onset – comes on very quickly – and passes in a short period of time. A childhood fever is an acute symptom. And pain from an injury, as in a skin cut is acute, for a matter of a day or so, the pain has left. Deeper injuries are of course more severe and take longer. A chronic disease is where the acute symptoms remain for two or more weeks. For example, a continuing low-grade fever lasting for weeks or acute phases coming periodically, unremittingly. If you have flu, and you never get well from these initial acute symptoms, this is called a chronic disease. There are many other examples. Top

Why are Modern Diseases Chronic?

  • The effects of vaccinations
  • The effects of pharmaceutical drugs
  • Previous illnesses not cured homeopathically
  • The effects of previous illnesses of our parents and grandparents, which we inherit

Why do these cause chronic ailments? Hahnemann found that if you seek to treat a symptom with a drug, which was not similar to the disease, it only suppresses the symptom. The disease seemingly is cured but in fact he found it was driven deeper into the body, and with more severe life-threatening symptoms. Skin disorders were the first to be suppressed in all of the history of human diseases, with drugs such as sulphur. Later, the sexually transmitted diseases of gonorrhoea and syphilis, not treated homeopathically, created another cause of chronic disease. From these improperly treated three diseases, all chronic ailments are seen arise.

Hahnemann called these chronic diseases Psora, Sycosis and Syphilis. Later the Tubercular was identified (a mix of psora and syphilitic). These are termed miasms, and all of us will have one or more present in our being. These miasms also affect our thinking and behaviour. Cure of chronic diseases is never simple as we have many layers or hidden aspects of these diseases. These are from out own acquired diseases, or that of our parents and even from those we love – our husbands and wives. Hahnemann maintained that only Homeopathy and with remedies that cure like with like, could cure these miasms. Top

The Law of Cure

An observant homeopath after Hahnemann, Constantine Hering (1800-1888), took this knowledge and set down the “law of cure”. This law carefully states when a cure is affected. This is very important to understand.
The healing progresses as follows:

1. From inside out.
2. From top to bottom.
3. From the more vital organs to the lesser vital organs.
4. The mind gets better before the body.
5. Symptoms disappear in the reverse time order they arrived – recent symptoms heal first.

The homeopath knows from your symptoms after a remedy has been given, whether it is the right remedy and whether it is progressing towards healing. This is why follow-up consultations are required and also for you, the patient, to inform the practitioner of any thing you may feel, physically, mentally or emotionally as a result of the remedy. Often the most incidental matter may be vitally important for the next prescription. Top

Healing Reactions

All remedies act on the mind and body. When they are selected according to your symptom “picture”, various things may happen. The ideal and purpose is to heal quickly and permanently. Sometimes a remedy will cause an aggravation. This means symptoms may appear worse before they become better. A short aggravation (lasting an hour, a day or so) may all be that happens, and then you become better thereafter. Also, old diseases will be healed and this may come as a surprise, as you may have forgotten about them. Remember, homeopathy does not create new diseases, it can and will only cure those already in the body, even those that quietly slumber, until awakened by the remedy’s healing stimulation of your inner vital force.

This is why it is important to be in touch with the practitioner to alert him or her to these occurrences, and the reason follow-up consultations are required. Why do adverse healing reactions occur?

  • Sometimes an incorrect remedy was selected. Each homeopathic remedy has an antidote, if your symptoms require it. This is rarely needed.

This is because the “picture” from the case taking was not complete. It is sometimes very difficult, as you may have forgotten, or cannot remember, or are too embarrassed, or the memory of it too painful to tell of something that is important. You must trust the integrity of the homeopath in this task. All information is kept in strict confidence.

The nature of chronic symptoms are deeply hidden. We can call this the hidden maintaining cause of the illness.

The remedy’s dilution (often called potency) was incorrectly selected. Usually the lower dilution is first offered. As healing progress is made, the higher dilutions are subsequently given, until the full “picture” of the remedy has acting in the body.

When a patient has been taking powerful suppressive drugs for a long time. For example: steroid creams for eczema. Often such medications have to be taken all of one’s life. This is not a healing drug, is it? Top

What happens then?

After the assessment of your case, a second prescription is offered. This and subsequent remedies are given until all symptoms are cured and you are in vital and abundant health. But it does not always work this way. Why? Patients say Homeopathy does not work and do not come to the next appointment. Many are used to a drug from GP or the chemist, and are happy the pain is gone, for the time being. Happy to have an organ removed because the surgeon said this is best.

Above all our children are vaccinated in the belief that diseases are wrong for them, but these vaccinations create enormous complications and many so-called new diseases are as a result from vaccinations. Modern medicine has made people think they are healed, and also impatient for the symptoms to go away.

Why does medicine all sick people patients? Because they must be patient in their illness! Healing takes time when the symptoms are chronic. Living for a long time with a “complaint” often for years, takes time but not years to heal. Top
